Paraguay pulled off a dramatic upset by defeating Germany 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation time during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32.

Julio Enciso gave Paraguay the lead in the 42nd minute, but Kai Havertz equalized for Germany in the 54th minute to force the match into extra time. With neither side able to find a winner, the contest was decided on penalties, where Paraguay held their nerve to secure a 4-3 victory.

It was Germany’s first-ever defeat in a World Cup penalty shootout, ending their campaign in dramatic fashion.

The result also marks another disappointing tournament for the four-time world champions, who have now failed to reach the Round of 16 in three consecutive FIFA World Cups.

The win sends Paraguay into the Round of 16, while Germany suffer an unexpected early exit from the tournament.
