Morocco secured a dramatic place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw in the Round of 32.
The Netherlands looked set for victory after Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute, but Issa Diop scored a dramatic equalizer in 90+1 minutes to send the match into extra time.
With neither side able to find a winner during extra time, the contest was decided on penalties. Morocco held their nerve from the spot, winning the shootout 3-2 to complete a remarkable comeback and book their place in the Round of 16.
