The French Open 2026 witnessed another shocking upset as former champion Novak Djokovic was eliminated after a thrilling five-set battle against Brazil’s 19-year-old rising star Joao Fonseca.
The match lasted nearly four and a half hours and was decided in the fifth set.
Djokovic started strongly, winning the first two sets 6-4, 6-4 and taking a comfortable lead. However, Fonseca staged an impressive comeback, not allowing the veteran player to regain control.
The Brazilian youngster won the third set 6-3, leveling the momentum of the match. The fourth and fifth sets turned into a nail-biting contest, where Fonseca held his nerve and secured both sets 7-5, sealing one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.
This is the second major upset of the French Open, as top seed Jannik Sinner was also eliminated earlier in the second round.
