Research, technology key to improving healthcare system: DUHS Pro Vice Chancellor

KARACHI: Pro Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Prof Jehan Ara Hasan, has emphasized that strengthening research and the effective use of modern technology can significantly improve the healthcare system. Addressing a one-day symposium at DUHS Ojha Campus, she said that the prudent application of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies has the potential to substantially enhance patient care, diagnostic processes, and the overall quality of medical research.
The one-day symposium titled “Healthcare Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Business Opportunities” was organised by the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialisation (ORIC), Dow University of Health Sciences, in collaboration with OPEN (Organisation of Pakistani Entrepreneurs of North America).
During the symposium, more than 15 startups from various departments of the university showcased their innovative ideas at dedicated startup booths. A large number of visitors showed keen interest in these projects at the Startup Corridor, appreciating the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of young innovators.
The event was attended by over 200 participants, including prominent healthcare professionals, academicians and entrepreneurs from Pakistan and abroad. Held under the patronage of Vice Chancellor DUHS Prof Dr Nazli Hossain, the symposium featured Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Jehan Ara Hasan as the chief guest, while Director ORIC and Principal, School of Public Health, Prof Dr Kashif Shafiq performed hosting duties.
The symposium featured in-depth discussions on entrepreneurship in healthcare, artificial intelligence, innovation, and emerging business opportunities in the health sector. A distinguished panel of experts participated in the discussions, including Managing Partner of Advantage Health and President of the Pakistani American Pathologists Society Dr Adeel Ahmed; President APPNA 2026 and Professor at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Dr Babar Rao; Professor and Transplant Hepatologist at the University of California, San Francisco, Dr Bilal Hamid; President of OPEN Global and Professor at New York University Tariq Khan; and Life Sciences Patent Attorney at Chicago-based law firm Cooley LLP, Dr Irij Haq.
In her address, Prof Jehan Ara Hasan thanked the distinguished guests and speakers, stating that the symposium reflected Dow University’s strong commitment to research, innovation and entrepreneurship. She reaffirmed that through ORIC, the university would continue to promote research-driven innovation and entrepreneurial activities to support the development of a modern, sustainable and efficient healthcare system in Pakistan.
Speaking during the panel discussion, Dr Adeel Ahmed highlighted the importance of clinician-led innovation in healthcare, noting that doctors are directly exposed to real-world patient challenges. He said this practical insight enables clinicians to develop scalable and implementable solutions that can bring meaningful improvements to healthcare systems.
Dr Babar Rao shared insights from his entrepreneurial journey in dermatology, emphasizing that international academic and business collaborations can play a crucial role in preparing Pakistani youth to compete globally. He noted that cross-border partnerships could help foster advanced healthcare startups in Pakistan.
Dr Bilal Hamid stated that the judicious use of artificial intelligence and digital technologies could significantly enhance patient care, diagnostics and medical research. He described technology-driven healthcare solutions as a critical need for the future.
Addressing young entrepreneurs, OPEN Global President Tariq Khan said universities should function as launch pads for innovation. He remarked that entrepreneurship is not merely about identifying problems, but about creating meaningful solutions for users.
Highlighting the importance of intellectual property and commercialisation, Dr Irij Haq said that early-stage awareness of patents, regulatory strategies and legal protection is essential for attracting investment and ensuring the long-term success of healthcare technologies.
At the conclusion of the symposium, Prof Jehan Ara Hasan presented shields to the speakers on behalf of Dow University of Health Sciences in recognition of their contributions.
