The opening round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage has concluded, with several title contenders making strong starts while others were forced to settle for draws.

England, Argentina, France, and Germany all secured impressive victories to move to the top of their respective groups. Germany recorded the biggest win of the round, thrashing Curaçao 7-1, while England defeated Croatia 4-2 in one of the tournament’s most entertaining matches.

In contrast, traditional powerhouses Brazil, Spain, Belgium, and Portugal failed to claim maximum points, drawing their opening fixtures and leaving their groups wide open.

Group A is currently led by Mexico and South Korea, while Group B remains perfectly balanced with Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar, and Switzerland all level on points. Similar situations can be seen in Groups G and H, where no team has managed to establish an early advantage.

Meanwhile, Sweden, Colombia, and Ghana joined the list of teams that opened their campaigns with important victories, boosting their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

With the first round now complete, attention turns to the second set of group-stage matches, where several high-profile clashes could significantly impact qualification hopes. Teams that failed to win their opening games will be under pressure to deliver results, while the early leaders will look to strengthen their grip on top spot.

The race for a place in the Round of 32 is officially underway, and the battle in every group remains wide open.
