Shark Predicts Brazil Win Ahead of World Cup Opener
A unique and entertaining event was held at Rio de Janeiro’s famous AquaRio aquarium ahead of the Football World Cup, where a female shark named Retinia made a symbolic prediction about the opening match between Brazil and Morocco.
During the event, divers placed two cans underwater labeled with the names of both teams. In front of spectators, the shark selected the can marked “Brazil,” which was seen as a sign predicting a Brazilian victory. The unusual activity attracted attention and excitement among football fans.
The event was part of a popular tradition of using animals to make symbolic predictions before major sporting tournaments, aimed at increasing fan engagement and tournament excitement.
AquaRio CEO Marcelo Szpilman said the initiative also aimed to improve public perception of sharks, which are often viewed as dangerous animals despite the need for their conservation.
Adding to the World Cup celebrations, a wax statue of Brazilian football legend Pelé was also unveiled at Rio de Janeiro’s Dreamland Wax Museum, becoming part of a special World Cup-themed exhibition.
