A Unique Village Where One in Every Five People Is a Twin

In the Indian state of Kerala, a small village named Kodinhi has gained worldwide attention due to its unusual and fascinating identity. At first glance, it appears to be a peaceful and ordinary village, but visitors are often surprised to see a large number of people who look strikingly similar.

Known as India’s “Twin Town,” Kodinhi is believed to have an exceptionally high rate of twin births, with nearly 20% of its population consisting of twins.

The village has become a mystery for researchers around the world due to this unusually high twin birth rate. In a country where twin births are relatively rare, Kodinhi reportedly has around 400 to 550 pairs of twins among nearly 2,000 families.

According to statistics, the village records about 42 to 45 twin births per 1,000 deliveries, which is significantly higher than the national average.

This trend has continued for decades, with new twins being born every year. Interestingly, even women from the village who marry and move to other areas have reportedly given birth to twins, adding further mystery to the phenomenon.

Recently, Kodinhi went viral again on social media after being featured in a promotional campaign by a well-known e-commerce company Flipkart, which highlighted its unique identity in a humorous way.

Scientifically, the village remains an unsolved puzzle. Despite several studies conducted by Indian and international researchers, no definitive explanation has been found.

Some scientists suggest it may be linked to local water or dietary factors, but no concrete evidence has confirmed this theory, and no specific gene or chemical has been identified as the cause.

For the local residents, twins are considered a blessing and a special gift of nature. To celebrate and support their unique identity, villagers formed an organization called the Twins and Kin Association in 2008.
