Ranikot Fort: The Great Wall of Sindh

Nearly seventy-five miles northwest of Hyderabad, a massive stone wall stretches across a desolate range of hills, rising and falling with the natural landscape. Extending over 22 miles, this enormous wall encloses a series of barren hillocks that show no signs of permanent human settlement. Together, these hills and the surrounding wall form the historic Ranikot Fort.

The fort is located approximately 18 miles west of Sann Railway Station on the Kotri–Larkana railway line. Access to the site is provided by a rough and sandy track that links the fort to the Indus Highway near Sann.

Historical documentation about Ranikot Fort is limited. However, available evidence suggests that it was constructed during the early 19th century by the Mirs of Sindh to counter the growing influence and military pressure of the British forces. The fort was intended to function as both a defensive stronghold and a safe refuge for the ruling Mirs if resistance failed. Despite its grand scale, signs indicate that the fort was never fully utilized for its intended purpose, as Sindh fell under British control before the fort’s completion.

The construction of the fort was carried out under the supervision of Nawab Wali Mohammad Khan Leghari, the Prime Minister of Sindh, in 1234 A.H. (1819 A.D.). The fort derives its name from a seasonal stream known as Rani Nai, which once supplied water to the surrounding region.

A dry streambed on the eastern side serves as the main entrance route to the fort, where the remains of an old bridge can still be seen. The stone-built defensive wall extends north and south from both sides of this stream and follows the natural contours of the hills. Along the wall, semi-circular bastions are positioned at regular intervals to strengthen its defenses.

While the wall encloses the area on three sides, the northern boundary is naturally protected by high mountain peaks, which act as a formidable defensive barrier.
