Mai Bakhtawar, a widow and mother of 5 children from village Dil Mahar UC Jamal district Ghotki, has constructed her low-cost house (#LCH) under the Sindh Government-funded People’s Poverty Reduction Program (#PPRP) implemented by SRSO – Sindh Rural Support Organization. She is also a member of the Village Organization, MashaAllah.
After the passing of her husband, Bakhtawar faced immense challenges raising her children alone. Her house, already damaged and roofless, became completely uninhabitable after the 2022 floods. With no steady income and no male support, she could not afford even basic necessities, such as repairs or rent. The family lived in unsafe and unhygienic conditions, with no privacy or sanitation.
Through support from #SRSO and #GoS, Bakhtawar received a Low-Cost Housing Unit along with an allied facility of a washroom and developed a kitchen garden as well. She and her children now live in a permanent, safe, and clean shelter with a #hygiene, giving them #security and #dignity.
Bakhtawar has utilized a small portion of her yard for kitchen gardening. She grows seasonal vegetables like spinach, coriander, and tomatoes, which help reduce daily expenses and improve her family’s #nutrition.
She also planted trees around the house to promote a healthy environment.
