FAO Pakistan marked World Soil Day 2025 under the global theme ‘Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities’ through coordinated events in all eight intervention districts of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) project ‘Transforming the Indus Basin with Climate Resilient Agriculture and Water Management’. Celebrations were held in Umerkot, Badin, and Sanghar Districts in Sindh, as well as in Khanewal, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Lodhran, and Muzaffargarh Districts in Punjab. The activities emphasized that soil health is not only foundational for rural agriculture but is equally critical for sustainable urban living, supporting urban gardening, climate mitigation, water filtration, and above all, food security.
Recognizing the significance of climate resilient agriculture for soil health, the project organized these activities to directly link CRA practices with sustainable soil management. The events successfully promoted a shared sense of responsibility among students, farmers, and local communities toward soil conservation. By actively engaging school children in awareness sessions, tableaux and farmers in practical demonstrations, such as soil sampling, composting, organic matter management, and green manuring, the initiative aimed to instill a deeper understanding of sustainable practices. This hands-on approach highlighted the direct link between soil health and collective well-being, empowering participants with the knowledge to protect this vital resource for better production, a healthier environment, and improved nutrition for both rural and urban populations.
