The Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery (CMS), Faculty of Veterinary Science (FVS), UAF in collaboration with Brooke Hospital for Animals launched a 5-day International Training Workshop on the Clinical Skill Laboratory (CSL), marking the first step toward establishing Pakistanโs first-ever CSL. This initiative builds on the advanced training obtained by a CMS faculty member during an international program held in Ethiopia in October 2025, supported by Brooke Hospital for Animals, United Kingdom.
In the inaugural session, Prof. Dr. Shahid Mahmood, Dean FVS, emphasized the importance of the CSL initiative for strengthening hands-on veterinary training in Pakistan. He also appreciated the longstanding partnership of Brooke with CMS and acknowledged its valuable support in all major academic and welfare events of the faculty. Dr. Muhammad Saqib, Chairman CMS, expressed hope that the establishment of the CSL will significantly enhance the clinical competencies of DVM students, enabling them to perform procedures more effectively and confidently. He commended Dr. Mughees Aizaz Alvi, Assistant Professor CMS, for swiftly translating the training he received in Ethiopia in October 2025 into a pilot CSL model at UAF.
Dr. Isabelle Ann Hocking (Brooke Global Animal Health Advisor, UK) presented her talk regarding the initiative of Clinical Skill Labs across the globe. Dr. Alemayehu Hailemariam (Head of Programs, Brooke Hospital for Animals, Ethiopia) joined virtually and shared his insights about the clinical skills labs. Dr. Ismail SY (Director of Studies, National Training Center for Livestock and Animal Industry Technicians, Senegal), Dr. Daniel Wambua Muasya (Lecturer, University of Nairobi, Kenya), Dr. John Kamau Makau (Senior Lecturer, AHITI, Kenya), Dr. Konan Bouhy Frank Emmanuel (Animal Welfare Officer, Brooke West Africa), and Dr. Brian Irungu Mwaura (Animal Welfare Assistant Officer, Brooke East Africa) also talked about their experience related to Clinical Skills Lab.
Dr. Muhammad Saleem (Regional Manager Brooke Faisalabad) highlighted the alignment of the CSL concept with global animal welfare standards. Dr. Muhammad Javaid Khan (Animal Health Care Manager, Brooke Pakistan) and Dr. Muhammad Shafi (Regional Manager, Brooke Multan) also addressed the audience, encouraging students to maximize learning from such modern training platforms to ensure improved animal care and welfare.
In addition to postgraduate students, nominated faculty members from University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore, Bahauddin Zakriya University (BZU), Multan, and Cholistan University of Veterinary and Animals Sciences (CUVAS), Bahawalpur were amongst the participants of this training workshop. Participants of the training workshop practiced the preparation of clinical skill models under the guidance of the lead facilitator, Dr. Isabelle Ann Hocking, and the moderator, Dr. Mughees Aizaz Alvi (Assistant Professor, CMS). On the final day of the training, Dr. Muhammad Saqib (Chairman, CMS) expressed his gratitude to Dr. Isabelle Ann Hocking for her dedicated efforts and for enlightening the participants about the fundamental concepts of the Clinical Skills Laboratory (CSL). He also extended his thanks to all esteemed participants, students, supporting staff, and the university administration for their contributions in making this event a success.
