The International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed former India captain Rohit Sharmaโ€”defending champions Indiaโ€™s skipperโ€”as the ambassador for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Under Rohit Sharmaโ€™s leadership, India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, after which he announced his retirement from T20 internationals.

During his T20 career, the former Indian captain scored 4,231 runs at an impressive average of 32.01 and a strike rate of 140.89, placing him among the top three highest run-scorers in the format.

Rohit Sharma is among the few cricketers in the world to have been part of two T20 World Cupโ€“winning teams. He was a member of Indiaโ€™s champion squad in the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup and later captained the team to victory in the 2024 World Cup.

The former Indian captain made his international debut during the 2007 T20 World Cup and scored 88 runs in the tournament without being dismissed. He played an unbeaten 50 against South Africa in the Super Eight stage and scored 30 runs in the final against Pakistan.

As captain in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma scored a team-high 257 runs for India with a strike rate of 156.70.

Reacting to his appointment as the ambassador for the 2026 T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma said that with the World Cup returning to India, being associated with the event once again is a great opportunityโ€”this time in a different role as its brand ambassador.

He added that he extends his best wishes to all players and hopes they enjoy a memorable experience, appreciate Indiaโ€™s hospitality, and leave with wonderful memories.

It is worth noting that the ICC has released the schedule for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The tournament will begin on February 7, and the final will be played on March 8, 2026.
