Cristiano Ronaldo Confirms FIFA World Cup 2026 Will Be His Final International Tournament
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the final major tournament of his international career.
Speaking to the media ahead of Portugal’s Round of 16 clash against Spain, the 41-year-old said he wants to enjoy every remaining moment with the national team.
“I want to enjoy this journey as much as possible. This will be my last World Cup, but I hope tomorrow won’t be my last match,” Ronaldo said.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner stressed that his legacy should not be judged solely by whether he wins the World Cup. He said he has given “not 100 percent, but 1,000 percent” to football throughout his career spanning more than two decades.
Ronaldo added that the day he retires from international football will eventually come, but he will leave the game with a clear conscience, knowing he gave everything for the sport.
Responding to criticism about his age, Ronaldo said he continues to perform at the highest level. He explained that he plays football out of passion rather than necessity and believes his performances speak for themselves, having already scored three goals in the 2026 World Cup.
Ronaldo has also made history during the tournament. After scoring twice against Uzbekistan, he became the first player ever to score in six different FIFA World Cup editions, adding another remarkable achievement to his legendary career.
