Bangladesh registered a historic 86-run victory over Australia in the opening match of the three-match ODI series, securing their first win against the visitors in 21 years. The rain-affected contest at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka was decided under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, though the hosts dominated for most of the game.

Batting first, Bangladesh posted a competitive total of 284 for 8 in their allotted overs. Returning to the national side after four years, Mosaddek Hossain played a match-winning unbeaten knock of 86 off 70 deliveries, smashing seven boundaries and three sixes. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 67 runs, while Tanzid Hasan added valuable runs at the top to provide a strong platform.

Shanto and Tanzid built a crucial 96-run partnership for the second wicket, putting the Australian bowlers under pressure early in the innings. Later, Mosaddek and Towhid Hridoy steadied the innings with responsible batting to ensure Bangladesh reached a challenging total.

For Australia, Nathan Ellis claimed three wickets, but the visitors were hurt by poor fielding after dropping four catches during Bangladesh’s innings.

Chasing 285, Australia struggled from the outset as opener Matt Short was dismissed off the very first ball, while Marnus Labuschagne managed only one run. Captain Josh Inglis and several other batters failed to cope with Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling attack.

Fast bowler Nahid Rana troubled the Australian batting lineup with his express pace, taking four wickets. Several of his deliveries crossed the 150 km/h mark. Mosaddek Hossain impressed with an all-round performance, claiming two wickets, while Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman also chipped in with key breakthroughs.

Cameron Green top-scored for Australia with 52 runs, while Alex Carey added 47, but their efforts were not enough to avoid defeat. When rain halted play, Australia were 191 for 9, handing Bangladesh an 86-run victory under the DLS method.

The result marked only Bangladesh’s second-ever ODI win against Australia. Their previous triumph came in 2005 in Cardiff, a famous upset that shocked the cricketing world. It was also Bangladesh’s first-ever home ODI victory over Australia.
