Today marks the death anniversary of Dr. Abida Taherani, the first woman Vice Chancellor of University of Sindh. She earned her Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Sindh and later obtained a PhD in Agricultural Economics from Colorado State University.
Dr. Taherani served as Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Economics at the University of Sindh. During her academic career, she supervised numerous students pursuing Master’s and PhD degrees. She also worked on several development projects supported by the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank.
She was associated with several national and international organizations, including the Pakistan Economic Council, the Council of Social Scientists, the National Statistical Council, and the International Association of Agricultural Economists, among others.
On 14 June 2014, she assumed office as Vice Chancellor of the University of Sindh. After a courageous battle with cancer, she passed away in London on 1 June 2016. Her contributions to higher education, economics, and academic leadership continue to be remembered and appreciated.
