Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that Iran’s national football team will stay in Mexico during the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

According to international media, President Sheinbaum said during a press briefing that the United States declined to allow the Iranian team to stay overnight in the country, prompting FIFA to reach out to Mexico for arrangements.

Sheinbaum stated that there was no reason for Mexico to refuse hosting the Iranian squad. She added that although Iran’s matches will be played in the United States, Washington was unwilling to accommodate the team on its soil.

Following this development, FIFA announced that Iran’s training base will be established in the city of Tijuana, Mexico.

Previously, the Iranian team’s base camp had been selected in Tucson, Arizona, but the situation changed due to rising tensions in the Middle East and security concerns.

Iran is scheduled to play its group-stage matches against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt in various cities across the United States.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali said that FIFA President has assured that Iranian players will receive visas to enter the United States.

However, the United States has also indicated possible restrictions on individuals linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
