EDHI FOUNDATION…..TO SERVE HUMANITY

Spread the love

The Edhi Foundation is one of the largest and most respected humanitarian organizations in the world. Established in 1951 by the late Abdul Sattar Edhi, the foundation is based in Karachi, Pakistan. Built on the principles of compassion, simplicity, and service to humanity, the Edhi Foundation has provided extensive social welfare services to millions of people regardless of religion, race, or background.

Abdul Sattar Edhi began his mission with very limited resources. He started by setting up a small dispensary in Karachi with the help of his wife, Bilquis Edhi, who played a crucial role in managing welfare services, especially for women and children. What began as a modest effort gradually expanded into a nationwide and internationally recognized humanitarian network. Edhi believed in the philosophy of “service to humanity” and lived a simple life, dedicating all his energy and resources to helping the poor and needy.

One of the most remarkable services provided by the Edhi Foundation is its ambulance network. The foundation operates one of the largest volunteer ambulance services in the world. These ambulances respond to emergencies, accidents, and natural disasters across Pakistan, providing free transportation to hospitals. In recognition of this achievement, the foundation has been acknowledged by the Guinness World Records for operating the world’s largest volunteer ambulance network. This service has saved countless lives, particularly in remote and underserved areas where medical facilities are limited.

In addition to ambulance services, the Edhi Foundation runs orphanages, old-age homes, shelters for homeless individuals, and rehabilitation centers. It provides care and protection for abandoned children, many of whom are left in cradles outside Edhi centers with the hope that they will find safety and love. The foundation ensures these children receive proper education, healthcare, and upbringing. It also supports women in distress, offering shelter and rehabilitation to victims of domestic violence and other hardships.

Healthcare services form another essential part of the foundation’s work. It operates free hospitals, maternity homes, dispensaries, and blood banks. Poor families who cannot afford medical treatment benefit greatly from these facilities. During natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes, the foundation plays a vital role in rescue operations and relief distribution. Its volunteers provide food, clean water, medical aid, and temporary shelter to affected communities….

The Edhi Foundation’s work is not limited to Pakistan. It has extended its services internationally by assisting in relief efforts during global crises. Whether responding to refugee crises or sending aid after natural disasters in other countries, the foundation has upheld its commitment to humanitarian values beyond borders.

What makes the Edhi Foundation truly unique is its independence and transparency. It relies primarily on donations from the public rather than government funding. This ensures that it remains neutral and focused solely on humanitarian service. Abdul Sattar Edhi was widely respected for his honesty, integrity, and modest lifestyle. Despite managing a vast organization, he lived in a small room adjacent to his office and owned only a few personal belongings. His life symbolized the true spirit of selfless service…..

After Abdul Sattar Edhi’s death in 2016, his son Faisal Edhi continued leading the organization, preserving his father’s mission and values. Today, the Edhi Foundation remains a beacon of hope for millions. It stands as a powerful example of how dedication, compassion, and sincerity can transform society./….
