Sukkur IBA Invited by HEC to Contribute to Pakistan’s Research Excellence Framework
Sukkur IBA University has been invited by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan to contribute to the development of Pakistan’s Research Excellence Framework (REF), a national initiative being undertaken in collaboration with the British Council under the Pak–UK Education Gateway.
Representing Sukkur IBA University, Professor Dr. Altaf Hussain Samo participated as an expert in an intensive five-day consultative workshop conducted with international specialists from the University of Sussex. Following these consultations, HEC finalized the REF framework, marking a significant step toward establishing a transparent, accountable, and internationally aligned research ecosystem in Pakistan.
The Research Excellence Framework is a strategic policy instrument aimed at strengthening research quality through alignment with global standards, enhancing the research environment via improved governance and digital systems, and maximizing real-world impact by ensuring that publicly funded research delivers meaningful social and economic benefits.
The REF will initially be piloted across ten selected universities before its nationwide rollout. This pilot phase will help refine assessment models with a strong focus on research outputs and societal impact, ensuring Pakistan’s academic contributions remain globally competitive.
This development represents a transformative milestone for Pakistan’s higher education and research landscape and reflects Sukkur IBA University’s active role in shaping national research policy through international collaboration.
