Rare Sight in Russia as Four Moons Appear in the Sky
A rare and captivating astronomical phenomenon was witnessed in Russia, where four images of the Moon appeared in the sky at the same time. Photos and videos of the astonishing sight quickly went viral on social media.
On Sunday night in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg, an unusual and mesmerizing scene was observed when three additional bright spots appeared alongside the Moon, creating the impression that four moons were visible in the sky.
Images and videos of the phenomenon spread rapidly across social media platforms, showing several glowing circular spots surrounding the real Moon, leaving viewers amazed.
According to astronomers, the remarkable sight observed in Saint Petersburg is known as “parselene,” commonly referred to as a “mock moon” or “moon dog.”
Russia’s state-run news agency RT also shared footage of the phenomenon on social media.
Experts explain that this rare event occurs in cold weather when moonlight passes through tiny ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. These crystals bend the light at specific angles, causing additional bright spots to appear around the Moon and creating the illusion of multiple moons in the sky.
Parselenes usually appear about 22 degrees or more away from the Moon. They are much fainter than the real Moon and are more clearly visible when the Moon is close to the horizon, as its reduced brightness makes the phenomenon easier to observe.
According to the astronomical organization Skybrary, these bright spots always appear at the same height as the Moon above the horizon. Their vertical shape and size depend on the angle and movement of ice crystals within the clouds. Larger ice crystals often produce longer and more prominent light pillars, making the scene even more dramatic.
Although parselenes are related to sun dogs, which are typically seen during the daytime, the appearance of multiple mock moons at the same time is extremely rare. The Saint Petersburg event stood out because several parselenes appeared simultaneously, creating the striking illusion of four moons in the sky.
Experts say the phenomenon serves as a reminder of how atmospheric and weather conditions can transform an ordinary night into an extraordinary and memorable experience. For those fortunate enough to witness it, the evening became a moment of wonder and quiet joy.
