Remains of a 9th-Century Jain Temple in Bhodesar Reflect Sindh’s Rich Heritage
The remains of a 9th-century Jain temple are located in Bhodesar, near Nagarparkar town in Sindh, Pakistan. Bhodesar once served as the regional capital during the Sodha dynasty, making it an important historical and cultural center.
The Bhodesar Jain Temple was constructed in a classical architectural style, using stone blocks without mortar. The structure stands on a high platform and is accessed through a series of steps carved directly into the rock, showcasing the advanced craftsmanship of the period.
The temple features massive stone columns and finely carved architectural elements that highlight the artistic excellence of Jain builders. Although parts of the structure have survived the passage of time, the remaining walls are unstable and partially collapsed, indicating the need for preservation.
Despite its deteriorating condition, the Bhodesar Jain Temple is considered the oldest and one of the most spectacular monuments in Sindh, representing the region’s diverse religious history and architectural legacy.
