Karachi University Professor Selected Academician of the Asian Academy of Sciences

KARACHI: The Asian Academy of Sciences (AAS has selected the prominent scientist Dr. Syed Ghulam Musharraf, a Professor at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, Academician of the Asian Academy of Sciences from Pakistan. He is the Youngest Academician selected from Pakistan in AAS.

According to a spokesperson for the ICCBS, University of Karachi, the announcement was made through an official communication from the AAS headquarter in Hong Kong, recognizing Prof. Musharrafโ€™s enormous contributions to the field of Mass Spectrometry.

The spokesperson confirmed that Prof. Musharraf is among the few chemistry Professors at the university to have earned a Doctorate of Science (D. Sc.) degree at an early stage in his career. He has also been serving the ICCBS as an in-charge academic since 2007.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Raza Shah, Director of ICCBS, extended his congratulations to Prof. Musharraf on this remarkable achievement, acknowledging it as a significant milestone not only for the professor but also for the institution.

It is worth mentioning here that Prof. Musharraf is a renowned expert in mass spectrometry. He is credited with establishing a modern research laboratory for mass spectrometry in Pakistan and has made pioneering contributions in biomarker research, particularly through metabolomics and proteomics approaches. His research has had a strong focus on addressing human health challenges, especially in the treatment of ฮฒ-thalassemia patients through collaborations with clinicians worldwide.

He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications (with a cumulative journal impact factor exceeding 1300 and an h-index of 43), along with multiple book chapters and edited volumes. Prof. Musharraf also holds U.S. patents and has received several national and international awards, including the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, recipient of two Gold Medals from Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS), Gold Medal in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman Young Scientist Gold Medal, and recognition as a Fellow of the Chemical Society of Pakistan, Fellow Royal Society of Biology (FRSB) UK, Fellow Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) UK, and selected member of TYAN, GYA and PAS.

To date, he has supervised over 50 Ph.D. students, including numerous HEC Indigenous Ph.D. scholars. Prof. Musharraf has also secured numerous competitive research grants from leading institutions such as HEC, SHEC, NIH, Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), OPCW, PSF, and National ICT R&D Fund.

This recognition as an Academician AAS marks another major milestone in his illustrious academic career and underscores the global impact of his scientific contributions.
