A consultative meeting was held between representatives of the Department of Food Science and Technology, University of Karachi, Nutrition International, and Mr. Sanaullah Ghuman, General Secretary, Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH), to deliberate on the challenge of industrially produced trans fatty acids (iTFA) in Pakistan.
During the interaction, Dr. M. Abdul Haq, Chairman, and Dr. S. M. Ghufran Saeed, Associate Professor, shared an overview of the prevailing iTFA landscape and outlined a spectrum of mitigation options, including technological improvements, product reformulation, and compliance driven interventions. Emphasis was placed on translating scientific evidence into practical actions that can protect public health.
Mr. Sanaullah Ghuman underscored PANAHโs continued advocacy against iTFA and welcomed the engagement with academia and the development sector. He noted that collaborative efforts are essential to raise awareness, support regulatory enforcement, and promote healthier edible oil and fat choices. The meeting concluded with an understanding to maintain dialogue and jointly support initiatives aimed at reducing iTFA-related health risks in the country.
