For #WorldChildrensDay, children led a historic session at the Punjab Assembly, with 16-year-old Muqaddas Khursheed chairing as Speaker. UNICEF Youth Advocate Taqwa Ahmad also joined the event.
Punjab launched its Child Protection Policy, becoming the first province with a policy fully aligned with the UNCRC. UNICEF thanks Ms Sarah Ahmad (T.I) Chairperson Child Protection and Welfare Bureau, government partners, civil society and the inspiring children whose voices shaped the day.
Hosted by Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan and joined by Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, the event also featured a childrenโ€™s theatre performance and a digital safety song.
Children took the lead and presented their key demands:
โ€ข Safe, happy, violence-free schools with kind teachers and no bullying
โ€ข Birth registration for every child, so no child is left without an identity
โ€ข Emotional support from caring adults at home, in schools, and in communities
โ€ข Protection from all forms of abuse and discrimination
โ€ข A stronger, well-coordinated child protection system across Punjab
Members of the Assembly listened as children shared their needs for protection, respect and empowerment. The Assembly committed to taking these demands forward through the Child Rights Caucus, with a promise to present them to the Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
Children spoke. Punjab listened.
