A consultative meeting on industrially produced trans fatty acids (iTFA) mitigation was held on December 11, 2025, at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety & Halal Food Authority (KPFS&HFA) between Director General Mr. Muhammad Wasif Saeed and a distinguished delegation from the Department of Food Science & Technology, University of Karachi.
The delegation comprised:
• Dr. M. Abdul Haq, Chairman

• Dr. Syed Arsalan Ali, Assistant Professor, Iqra University
• Dr. Seema Ashraf, Sindh Food Authority
The delegation delivered an insightful presentation on the public health implications of iTFAs and shared practical, industry-focused mitigation strategies for edible oil and fat processors. They highlighted the importance of regulatory controls, food industry compliance, and consumer awareness to reduce iTFA exposure in Pakistan.
DG Mr. Wasif Saeed appreciated the initiative and briefed the delegation on major reforms underway at the Authority, including:
• Real-time digital field monitoring and enforcement dashboards
• The upcoming 15-year Food and Health Disease Burden Baseline Study
• Strengthened regulatory inspection frameworks
• Expansion of high-tech laboratory infrastructure
• Enhanced risk-based and compliance-based enforcement supported by Mobile Food Testing Laboratories
He emphasized that these developments reflect the Authority’s commitment to modernizing food safety governance, improving surveillance systems, and aligning with global best practices.
The delegation also visited the state-of-the-art Provincial Food Testing Laboratory & Centre for Research, where Dr. Syed Abdul Sattar Shah, Director Technical, along with Rahmul Aziz, Deputy Director Lab, and the laboratory team, briefed them on the ongoing advancements in laboratory operations, expanded testing scope, and strengthened quality assurance systems supporting regulatory enforcement. He highlighted the laboratory’s high-end analytical capabilities, modern instrumentation, and automation-driven workflows that collectively enhance accuracy, efficiency, and reliability of food testing across the province.
During a brief tour of the laboratory complex, the delegation expressed strong appreciation for the KPFS&HFA’s efforts, particularly its:
• Integrated digitization initiatives
• Robust enforcement mechanisms
• Deployment of high-tech analytical instruments
• Risk-based and compliance-based inspection models
• Effective use of mobile testing laboratories for rapid field-level screening
• Establishment of a state-of-the-art Provincial Food Testing Laboratory & Centre for Research
The delegates commended the Authority’s vision, modern systems, and progressive approach toward ensuring safer food systems across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The meeting concluded with a shared resolve to enhance technical cooperation, expand research linkages, and advance iTFA reduction efforts through collaborative capacity-building, scientific exchange, and regulatory strengthening.
