HEC Initiates University Accessibility Audit, Commends BNB Women University Sukkur’s Efforts

(Sukkur) – In a significant move to promote inclusivity in higher education, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has launched a comprehensive accessibility audit across universities in Pakistan. This initiative follows the directives of the Honourable Islamabad High Court (IHC) to ensure compliance with the national Accessibility Code and other relevant standards.
An HEC team recently conducted a detailed audit at The Begum Nusrat Bhutto Women University (BNBWU) in Sukkur, focusing on wheelchair facilities and overall accessibility. The visiting delegation included Mr. Meer Hassan, Disability Officer, and Mr. Riaz Ahmed Qureshi, Deputy Director.

The audit involved a thorough inspection of the university’s physical infrastructure to ensure an inclusive environment for students and staff with disabilities. The team meticulously reviewed key areas, including:

Academic Spaces: Classrooms, libraries, and laboratories.

Common Facilities: Cafeterias, common rooms, and toilets.

Navigation: Accessible routes, pathways, and the availability of relevant signage.

During their visit, the HEC officials also held a meeting with the university’s Accessibility Committee and other key stakeholders. The team expressed their satisfaction with the resources and measures already in place at BNBWU, acknowledging the institution’s proactive steps towards creating a barrier-free campus.

This audit marks a pivotal step towards making higher education in Pakistan more accessible and equitable for all, ensuring that universities are welcoming and functional spaces for students with disabilities.
