ISO Calls for Judicial Commission in Nadia Ashraf’s Suicide Case

Karachi: The Imamia Students Organization Pakistan has declared the Sindh Government’s proposed bill “International Center for Science Bill 2024/2025” as anti-education and has completely rejected it. The organization demands that the ICCBS Degree Awarding Bill be withdrawn and that measures for the improvement of the institute be taken only after consultation with all stakeholders. They also urge the authorities to establish a judicial commission to reinvestigate the 2020 suicide case of ICCBS student Nadia Ashraf in a transparent manner.

These views were expressed by ISO Karachi University Unit President Azhar Hussain, during a press conference held along with other organizational members at the main gate of ICCBS, University of Karachi. He strongly criticized the attempt to hand over billions worth of public educational and research assets to two donors, Nadra Panjwani and Aziz Jamal, calling it an act of hostility towards the University of Karachi.

He said that a complete performance-based audit of HEC grants from 2002 to 2023, during the tenure of Iqbal Choudhary, should be conducted. He stated that the environment of the institute during Iqbal Choudhary’s period was extremely oppressive for students, which led one of his students, Nadia Ashraf, to take her own life. He also demanded that justice, transparency, and a better academic environment be ensured for students.

He further demanded that the current and future interference of Iqbal Choudhary in the institute be ended, and that Nadra Panjwani and Aziz Jamal be removed from the board. He added that immediate implementation of the recommendations of the Karachi University Audit 2020 must be ensured.
