A farmer in Linqu County, Shandong Province, China, named Hu Guangzhou, spent over a decade building an extraordinary, seven-story castle-like tower by hand. Using only scavenged materials, mud, and basic tools, his incredible journey was driven by a tragic and profound motive.<\/p>\n
The Inspiration
\nWhen Hu was a young man, he suffered a massive fever that left him with a mental disability. As his two brothers left for the city to find work, they made a promise to him: once they had earned enough money, they would return, build a beautiful home, and start a family together.<\/p>\n
Tragically, both brothers died in the city\u2014one in a car accident, the other from a severe illness. Because of his condition, Hu never fully accepted or understood this reality. He held onto their promise and was convinced that they would one day return to live with him.<\/p>\n
The Construction- Driven by this hope, Hu began stacking scavenged bricks, clay, dirt, and scrap wood. Working without blueprints, machinery, or any formal construction training, he built the house one floor at a time.<\/p>\n
The process: He used nothing but his bare hands and immense dedication, spending over 10 years on the project.
\nThe result: He erected a towering, seven-story structure. It featured spiral staircases, balconies, and towers.
\nThe resilience: He once slipped and fell from the second floor during a rainstorm, landing in the hospital for two months. As soon as he recovered, he went right back to building.<\/p>\n
The Aftermath- Moved by his unrelenting devotion, locals and neighbors eventually stepped in to help him finish the final two floors in 2016.<\/p>\n
While the handmade architecture is visually stunning and resembles a real-life Howl’s Moving Castle, engineers and government officials declared the structure structurally unsafe. For his own safety, local authorities convinced Hu to leave the tower and relocate to government-provided housing, though the unique monument still stands as a haunting, real-life symbol of brotherhood, grief, and hope.<\/p>\n
