Poor decision-making, an inconsistent batting unit, and an ineffective pace attack all combined in a performance that raised major concerns.

One of the biggest talking points was captain Shan Masood’s choice to bowl first on a surface expected to worsen as the match progressed. Chasing 268 on a deteriorating fifth-day wicket proved too difficult for a batting lineup already struggling for stability and confidence.

The decision at the toss immediately placed Pakistan under pressure and ultimately worked in Bangladesh’s favor.

Pakistan’s fast-bowling department also failed to make an impact. Modern Test cricket relies heavily on pacers who can generate pace, aggression, and sustained pressure, but Pakistan’s attack lacked intensity throughout the match. Bangladesh’s batters appeared comfortable for long periods, with little sign of fear or discomfort against the seamers.

Pakistan’s dependence on spin-friendly home conditions often hides the shortcomings of the pace attack, but overseas conditions continue to expose those flaws. Bangladesh further strengthened their position by capitalizing on the 37 extras conceded by Pakistan in the first innings.

The batting unit also disappointed. While newcomers Azan and Abdullah showed encouraging signs, experienced players including Imam-ul-Haq, Shan Masood and Saud Shakeel failed to deliver when stability was needed most.

Half-centuries from Salman Ali Agha and Mohammad Rizwan helped Pakistan recover slightly in the first innings, but their efforts were not enough to put the visitors in command.

At one stage, Pakistan looked capable of securing a first-innings lead, but careless batting from the middle and lower order allowed the advantage to slip away. Instead of building pressure, Pakistan surrendered wickets cheaply and handed momentum back to Bangladesh.

The lack of resistance from the tailenders remained another major concern. In modern cricket, lower-order batters are expected to contribute valuable runs, but Pakistan’s tail folded quickly once the specialist batters departed. In contrast, Bangladesh’s last-wicket stand added crucial runs and demonstrated the importance of lower-order partnerships.

Overall, Pakistan produced an underwhelming display with both bat and ball, lacking discipline, planning, aggression, and mental strength. Until consistent performers emerge and the team develops greater resilience overseas, victories away from home may continue to remain out of reach for Shan Masood’s side.

Pakistan national cricket team’s loss to Bangladesh national cricket team in the opening Test at Mirpur highlighted serious weaknesses that continue to trouble Pakistan in red-ball cricket.
