Esophageal Cancer Awareness Day Celebration \u2013 April (World Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month)<\/p>\n

The Department of Surgery, Upper GI & Bariatric Unit at Dow University of Health Sciences, in collaboration with Civil Hospital Karachi, commemorated Esophageal Cancer Awareness Day as part of the global observance of Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month in April.<\/p>\n

The Upper GI Unit stands as the first dedicated unit of its kind in the province, providing state-of-the-art, comprehensive cancer care under one roof\u2014entirely free of cost. The occasion also marked a significant milestone for the unit, celebrating the successful completion of more than 250 laparoscopic procedures and over 70 robotic cancer surgeries. This achievement establishes the unit as a pioneer in the country, being among the first to perform advanced robotic cancer surgeries with the support of the Government of Sindh Health Department.<\/p>\n

The program commenced with an awareness walk, actively participated in by doctors, faculty members, students, and cancer survivors. The participants raised slogans to highlight the importance of awareness and early detection of this common yet highly distressing malignancy.<\/p>\n

Following the walk, a well-attended academic session was held at the Arag Auditorium Dow Medical College. The audience comprised general practitioners, undergraduate and postgraduate students, faculty members, and distinguished guests from diverse professional backgrounds.<\/p>\n

The event was graced by eminent personalities. The Chief Guest, M. Saeed Quraishy, Emeritus Professor and former Vice Chancellor of DUHS, who also serves as Patron-in-Chief of the Upper GI Unit, attended alongside the Guest of Honour, Nazli Hossain, and Special Guest, renowned gastroenterologist Saad K. Niaz.<\/p>\n

Sajida Qureshi, Pro Vice Chancellor and Chair of Surgery, emphasized the critical importance of awareness, early diagnosis, and timely management. She also shared the unit\u2019s outcomes and the impact of providing advanced cancer surgeries free of cost.<\/p>\n

The Vice Chancellor, Chief Guest, and Guest of Honour also addressed the gathering, appreciating the efforts of the unit in advancing cancer care and education.<\/p>\n

A particularly moving segment of the event included cancer survivors sharing their personal journeys, offering hope and inspiration to patients and attendees alike. The program concluded with a multidisciplinary panel discussion, where experts from oncology, radiology, pathology, and surgery deliberated on key aspects of early diagnosis, treatment strategies, and improving outcomes in esophageal cancer.<\/p>\n
