It can cause permanent paralysis and, in some cases, death. While most countries around the world have successfully eliminated polio, Pakistan remains one of the last few countries where the virus still exists. The Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme (PPEP) represents a nationwide effort to eliminate polio once and for all and ensure a healthier future for every child in the country.

The Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme was launched with the goal of interrupting the transmission of the poliovirus through widespread immunization, effective surveillance, and community engagement. It is a collaborative initiative led by the Government of Pakistan and supported by international partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Rotary International, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Together, these organizations provide technical expertise, funding, vaccines, and logistical support to reach millions of children across the country.

At the heart of the programme are mass immunization campaigns, commonly known as National Immunization Days (NIDs). During these campaigns, trained health workers and volunteers go door to door to administer oral polio vaccine (OPV) to children under five years of age, regardless of their previous vaccination status. This strategy ensures repeated doses of the vaccine, which are necessary to build strong immunity against the virus. Special focus is placed on high-risk areas, including remote regions, urban slums, border areas, and places affected by conflict or population movement.

Another critical component of the Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme is disease surveillance. A robust surveillance system helps detect poliovirus circulation at an early stage. This includes monitoring cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) and environmental surveillance through sewage sampling. By identifying where the virus is present, health authorities can respond quickly with targeted vaccination campaigns to prevent further spread. This scientific and data-driven approach has significantly reduced the number of polio cases in recent years……

Despite notable progress, the programme faces several challenges. Vaccine hesitancy, fueled by misinformation, myths, and mistrust, remains a major obstacle. Some communities wrongly believe that the polio vaccine causes infertility or contains harmful substances. Others refuse vaccination due to religious misunderstandings or lack of awareness. To address these concerns, the programme emphasizes community engagement and social mobilization. Religious leaders, teachers, local elders, and healthcare professionals are involved to educate families about the safety and importance of vaccination.

Security challenges have also affected polio eradication efforts in certain areas. In the past, attacks on polio workers disrupted campaigns and endangered lives. However, the government has taken strong measures to protect frontline workers by providing security support and improving coordination with law enforcement agencies. The courage and dedication of polio workers—many of whom are women working in difficult conditions—deserve special recognition. Their commitment is the backbone of the programme…….

The Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme also focuses on strengthening routine immunization systems. While campaigns play a vital role, routine immunization ensures that children receive all essential vaccines on time. By improving healthcare infrastructure, training staff, and increasing access to basic health services, the programme contributes not only to polio eradication but also to overall public health development.

Media and communication campaigns are another powerful tool used to raise awareness. Television, radio, print media, and social media platforms are used to spread accurate information and encourage parents to vaccinate their children. Well-known public figures, sports personalities, and celebrities act as ambassadors for the cause, helping to build trust and motivate communities to participate in vaccination drives.

Eradicating polio in Pakistan is not just a national responsibility—it is a global priority. As long as the virus exists anywhere, children everywhere remain at risk. A polio-free Pakistan will strengthen global health security and stand as a symbol of what can be achieved through unity, persistence, and collective action….

                                                           ==========

Polio is a highly infectious and crippling disease that mainly affects children under the age of five.
